Hello!
Need an engaging way to review text structure and other non-fiction comprehension skills? Then this is the activity for you! My students have been BEGGING me for time to work on this activity… we have had FIVE snow days that have interrupted our progress!
New Years Hidden Picture Activity: Text Structure
1) Have your students read the article, “Are These Stories True? Nope.” from the Scholastic Scope’s May 2017 magazine. They will absolutely LOVE reading about these fake news stories!2) Share this Google Slides presentation with your students. There are directions on the first slide, then the hyperlinks to each of the stations are included on the second slide. I have also included the hyperlinks to each station below.
3) Have students use this hidden grid paper to solve the mystery message. Spoiler alert: it spells out “HAPPY NEW YEAR” so make sure to use it ASAP!
4) Watch your students HAVE FUN and practice their comprehension skills! This activity can be completed individually or in groups.
What A Station Looks Like
You might be wondering what a station will look like for your students. All of the stations are set up in the same format, but ask them a different set of 3-5 questions.
Once your students click on the link provided, they will see a screen that looks like this:
They will then be shown just ONE question.
If they answer the question incorrectly, they will see a screen that directs them back to their reading to find the correct answer.
If they answer the question correctly, they will be given the color and coordinates of a couple squares on their graph. After graphing their coordinates, it will give them the next question!
They will continue through all of that station’s questions until they reach the end!
They should then move on to another station!
I hope your students enjoy this activity as much as mine!
